Wedding Venues in Italy: A Region-by-Region Guide to the Most Iconic Locations

For years, Italy has been the most desired destination in the world for luxury weddings, and it is easy to see why. What attracts international couples is not only an extraordinary architectural heritage, but a whole set of elements that belong to our way of life: the culture of hospitality, the food, even the slow rhythm with which the days unfold. These are things that cannot be replicated by building a hospitality venue from scratch, because they come from centuries of history and from a deep bond with the land.

The most breathtaking wedding venues in Italy are concentrated in different areas with completely distinct identities: Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast and Tuscany. Three worlds, three atmospheres, three types of wedding. Here is what makes each of them a dream for those who choose Italy as the setting for the most important day of their lives.

Lake Como: the waterfront villas that redefined the luxury wedding

Lake Como has a light unlike any other. It is a light that changes constantly throughout the day — metallic in the morning, golden in the afternoon, almost theatrical at sunset — and turns every outdoor ceremony into something cinematic, without the need for elaborate scenic design. This is why the villas on the lake have become an international benchmark for high-end weddings.

The most desired of all is Villa del Balbianello, on the tip of the Lavedo peninsula. Its position is so exposed to the lake that every angle offers a different backdrop, while the terraced gardens make it possible to design the ceremony on several levels, with greenery and water as the only scenery. It is a location that takes your breath away on its own, so the décor can remain minimal: the effect will still be spectacular.

Villa Balbiano is more intimate, with its seventeenth-century frescoes and furnishings that blend antique and contemporary pieces, creating the feeling of a wedding “at home”: as though the guests were private visitors rather than attendees at an event venue.

For those who also want to simplify logistics, there are prestigious hotel alternatives such as the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa d’Este, and the Mandarin Oriental, all key reference points in the area.

High-end hotels like these allow you to host both the ceremony and hospitality in the same location, avoiding the need to move dozens of guests along the narrow, winding roads of Lake Como, which – especially in summer – can become an unpredictable factor. At the same time, they offer the chance to fully enjoy the timeless beauty of luxury properties set within the cinematic backdrop of Lake Como.

Lake Como is at its best with every type of wedding, from the most intimate celebrations to the grandeur of almost princely affairs. The ideal months? June and September, when light and climate find their perfect balance.

Amalfi Coast: getting married between sea and rock, among the charm of cliffside venues

Let us move from Lake Como to the Amalfi Coast. If the lake is intimate, horizontal and silent, here everything is vertical, exposed, almost dramatic. The villas seem to cling to the rock, the sea is a constant presence — you arrive by boat, dine while looking at it, sense it even when you cannot see it — and the Mediterranean vegetation adds colour and fragrance to the whole experience. A wedding on the Amalfi Coast is, above all, a sensory matter.

Villa Cimbrone, in Ravello, is the landmark. Its Terrace of Infinity is not simply a panoramic belvedere: it is a space that suspends those who walk through it in a dimension slightly outside the world, and using it as the backdrop for a ceremony creates an unrepeatable effect. Ravello, set higher than the coast, has a more contemplative, less touristy atmosphere.

Positano is vibrant, saturated, with that verticality of houses descending towards the harbour and creating a natural amphitheatre. Villa Treville is the most exclusive option: a property that can be rented in its entirety. The Belmond Hotel Caruso, with its infinity pool overlooking the valley and now firmly part of the international wedding imagination, as has Villa La Rondinaia, perched above Ravello, are equally luxurious and exclusive choices.

There is, however, one aspect to keep in mind. Logistics on the Amalfi Coast are not simple: narrow roads, heavy traffic from June to September, and transfers between venues, hotels and receptions all require rigorous planning. It is the most spectacular destination of all, but also the one where there is the least room for improvisation; it is better to rely on a specialised wedding planner.

Tuscany: villages, Medici villas and estates in the heart of the Italian countryside

What Tuscany offers, and what neither the Amalfi Coast nor Lake Como can provide, is a sense of space. The open landscape of the hills, the rows of cypress trees, the vineyards stretching towards the horizon: it is a landscape that relaxes those who look at it and allows the wedding to unfold over time in a completely natural way. It is no coincidence that Tuscan celebrations often last several days: a welcome dinner at the estate the night before, followed by the ceremony, and a post-wedding brunch among the olive trees or a pool party overlooking historic and prestigious towns such as Siena the following day.

The very structure of the properties — many are entire villages, with several buildings where guests can stay together — allows this without any sense of forcing.

Borgo Santo Pietro, in the hills of Siena, is probably the most successful example of this formula, a small self-sufficient microcosm: spa, Michelin-starred restaurant, meticulously tended vegetable gardens, gardens designed with almost obsessive care, all set within a landscape that looks as though it has come out of a Renaissance painting. The wedding experience here is slow, enveloping and deeply connected to the food and wine produced on the estate.

Villa Mangiacane, in Chianti, works on a more Renaissance register — the manor villa with vineyards, frescoes and a view of Florence in the distance — while Castello di Vicarello, secluded in the hills of Grosseto, is the perfect choice for those seeking total privacy, far from the tourist circuits. La Foce, in the Val d’Orcia, then adds the value of a landscape that is a UNESCO World Heritage site and that, at certain times of day, with the grazing light and the long shadows of the cypress trees, reaches a beauty that leaves even those who have always known it speechless.

Tuscany is also the most flexible region in terms of guest numbers and event format. There are estates designed for intimate weddings of thirty people and estates that can comfortably manage celebrations with three hundred guests. The best season is between May and June, and again in September, when the light is warm but not blinding and the countryside has those saturated colours that make any excess of flowers unnecessary.

How to choose the right venue when every option seems perfect

The first filter should be the type of experience you imagine, not the beauty of the venue itself. All the properties we have mentioned are extraordinary, but the intimate, contemplative wedding that works in Ravello cannot be replicated on Lake Como, just as the atmosphere of a Tuscan weekend among friends cannot be recreated in a villa overlooking the sea.

The real capacity — not the one declared in brochures, but the one in which guests are actually comfortable — is another point to verify carefully. The season also matters more than one might think: the Amalfi Coast in July or August is magnificent but overcrowded with tourists, and the heat can make outdoor ceremonies challenging; the lake in October can still offer pleasant temperatures, but the weather is often unpredictable; and Tuscany in July or August can be scorching.

And it is precisely at this stage that relying on someone who knows the destinations becomes a practical choice: Nicole Sparvieri works across these three areas with direct experience that allows her to guide couples towards the right venue, starting from their vision. Because a truly unforgettable wedding is one in which every element is in its place, and no one notices.
